Lucky us, we have lakes strung together with easy trails many hours away from similar landscapes in the Sierra. Avoid the running and hiking traffic on the west side of Mt. Tam and head to the northern slopes where you pass through verdant parklands rich with redwoods, douglas fir and ducks. What could be better on a sunny California afternoon than parking at Bon Tempe Lake, paying the $8 entry fee, passing across the dam there then rambling up to Alpine Lake which has a 5.5 mile loop trail perimeter which leads you to the deep pleasures of Marin’s rural serenity.
